Celebrating Alongsiders

This month marked the end-of-year camps for our Alongsiders programme.

Throughout the year, young people from local churches have been walking alongside vulnerable children in their communities, known as their "little brothers" and "little sisters." Using a specially designed comic-book curriculum, these youth mentors have been helping children navigate life experiences, build character, and discover hope in Jesus.

In partnership with Alongsiders International, 4Freedom has been coordinating two groups of Alongsiders as they complete their first year of mentoring. To celebrate this milestone, we held end-of-year camps in Bantayan Island, north of Cebu, and in Maasin on the island of Leyte.

The camps provided an opportunity for the young mentors and their little brothers and sisters to enjoy games, activities, and shared experiences together. What stood out was that the mentoring relationship remained at the centre of everything. The older youth partnered with their younger companions throughout the camp, demonstrating the care, encouragement, and responsibility they have developed over the past year.

The camps also included teaching and encouragement from local pastors and church leaders, followed by a graduation ceremony to recognise the commitment and hard work of the youth mentors.

While not all of the approximately 60 Alongsiders enrolled at each location were able to attend, there was still a strong turnout and a wonderful atmosphere. I was particularly moved by the deep trust and affection that has developed between the mentors and the children they serve. It was evident that these relationships are making a real difference.

Alongsiders is a three-year journey, and we are only at the beginning. Over time, these mentoring relationships have the potential to impart values, confidence, faith, and hope that many of these vulnerable children may not receive elsewhere. We are grateful to see local churches investing in the next generation, and vulnerable communities, in such a practical and life-giving way.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support, which make programmes like this possible.
